Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such medications must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
