Seven alleged individuals of German far-left organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
