An extensive 60-day journey around Australia was terminated days after the fatal incident of an older female passenger who was left behind by the vessel on a remote tropical isle.
The passenger had been walking on the tropical location with shipmates from the vessel, but separated from the group for a rest. The liner left without her and came back later that day after the personnel realised the passenger was unaccounted for.
A major hunt found her person the next day.
Investigative bodies are investigating the event, in coordination with law enforcement and the official investigator.
Head of the cruise operator stated that travelers and personnel on the Coral Adventurer were told that the rest of the journey had been called off due to the "sad loss and prior mechanical issues".
Through an announcement, he further stated that travelers would be given a full refund, and said the company was working "to coordinate the travel back of the travelers via private aircraft".
Regulatory bodies also released an updated statement, and said they had "provided a notice to the Master" preventing any additional guests from getting on the ship.
The representative said that they would visit the vessel in Cairns upon its arrival.
Sequence of Incidents
The vessel originally sailed from the coastal city on 24 October, and was just two days into the journey at the point of the senior passenger's demise. The remote island was the opening port on the itinerary.
Guests on the vessel - who typically pay large sums of dollars to take part in the cruise - were ferried there for a shore visit with the choice of hiking or snorkelling.
Family Reaction
The child of the deceased woman said that her loved ones was "surprised and grieved that the vessel left the location after an scheduled excursion without my mum".
Through her comments, she described her mum as an "active octogenarian" who was a member of a walking group.
"According to scant facts we have been told, it seems that there was a breakdown of attention and basic judgment," she stated.
She added that she wished the investigation would be able to identify what "the operator should have undertaken that might have saved Mother's life".
"We understand from the investigators that it was a exceptionally warm afternoon, and mother fell ill on the uphill trek," she explained.
"They requested her to return, alone. Then the boat departed, reportedly without conducting a headcount.
"At a certain moment in that chain of events, or not long after, mother passed away, alone."
Operator Response
Through an announcement, the Chief Executive affirmed that the operator was "cooperating fully with authorities to support their inquiry".
He stated that the firm was "very regretful that this has occurred" and had offered its complete assistance to the family.
Maritime Business Procedures
The vessel caters for up to a hundred twenty guests with nearly fifty personnel, according to official data. It was specifically designed to reach distant regions of the nation's coastline and is equipped with "small boats" - small boats used to take passengers on land visits.
Incidents of this nature are infrequent, and liners have procedures to record which individuals are boarding or getting off, according to industry experts.
"Going ashore secretly or [back] aboard really isn't an option," a specialist stated.
Cruise lines take these procedures with great importance and have "clever tech in place to stop such incidents from happening," the specialist further stated.
"This appears to be probably a stunning - and unfortunate - single occurrence."
